Lossless audio compression reduces the original file size of a song while preserving all of the data perfectly.

  • What is lossless audio and how can I listen to it?.

Dolby Atmos is not available with the Apple Music Voice Plan.

For the full list of compatible devices, please see /en-us/HT212182. You can also hear Dolby Atmos music using the built‑in speakers on a compatible iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or iMac, or by connecting your Apple TV 4K to one of the following: HomePod speakers set up as the default speakers, a Dolby Atmos–compatible sound bar, a Dolby Atmos–enabled AV receiver, or a television that supports Dolby Atmos audio. For other headphones, go to Settings > Music > Audio and set Dolby Atmos to Always On. When you listen with compatible Apple or Beats headphones or most Bluetooth headphones, Dolby Atmos music plays back automatically when available for a song. And that should scare roon, as apple has an army of coders that can churn that out virtually overnight.Dolby Atmos is an audio technology that creates an immersive listening experience in which sound comes from all around you.Īpple Music subscribers using the latest version of Apple Music on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV 4K can listen to thousands of Dolby Atmos music tracks using any headphones. But without a lot of effort on apple’s part, they could knock something together that is very roon-like if they wanted to, they already have the catalog and the streaming, and the hooks into the hardware ecosystem. I subscribe to qobuz to get the full functionality of what roon offers. I like roon a lot (when they aren’t ruining it with buggy updates), it offers a view into music and artists that is unrivaled out there. If I was a betting man, I’d say that apple music will outlive all these other services and platforms. you might not like the implementations, but lots of people do. Apple has shown over the last two decades that they know how to play music (ipod, itunes, iphone, airpods, homepods, and track sales). I keep two lossless libraries, one on a nuc running ROCK, and one in iTunes. iTunes and apple music plays nicely with my apple ecosystem, roon is a mixed bag. airplay is more forgiving of network latencies and weirdness in my experience. ITunes, apple music and carplay allow me to take my music with me anywhere, anytime. I can see that changing pretty quickly though if it becomes a priority for them. iTunes is crap when it comes to trying to integrate your local library with their apple music streaming service. iTunes has always been a mess from a GUI standpoint, but roon is also a mess but in different ways.

I’ve been using iTunes for 18 years, and streaming losslessly through airplay for nearly that long. I agree with you, it’s very functional for only local files.
